Sport Throttle Response
The Sport Throttle Response system is exclusive to the Alfa 166. Fitted as standard to V6 engines, the device modulates engine response to accelerator controls: it can be made slower or faster as required. When combined with a non-overdrive five or six-speed gearbox, it offers a lively, entertaining drive while still enabling the car to be driven in a more relaxed, comfortable manner around town or whenever the driver wishes.
When the engine is running, the control unit is always set to standard driving mode. The STR is activated (indicated by a warning light) by pressing a control on the console near the gear lever, but the driver must also activate the system by releasing the accelerator pedal (otherwise the control could be operated inadvertently by the passenger).
Once the device is active, the throttle opening angle increases without altering pressure on the accelerator pedal to enhance the 166’s sporty acceleration. When the switch is operated again and pressure is taken off the accelerator pedal, the normal more comfortable driving mode is restored next time the car accelerates.
The system can also be switched from standard to sport mode automatically by pressing the accelerator pedal quickly. This comes in very handy when fast acceleration is required while overtaking or during an emergency manoeuvre.
